Every brand feels a little different on your feet. Here, we’ve gathered what we’ve noticed about each one to make it easier for you to choose.
We’re most often asked: “Which brand should I choose?” The truth is, it depends on your feet, how you dress, and how much you want to spend. There isn’t one brand that’s best for everyone.
Below are our observations. Models from the same brand can also differ in size, so we’ve added a few tips at the end to help you choose the right size.
Nike: soft cushioning and plenty of choice
They’re for you if: you want a soft shoe for walking and running, or a classic like the Air Force 1 that goes with almost everything.
Good to know: running models (Pegasus 42, Vomero 18) are soft and springy. Many models have a narrower toe box, so if you have wider feet, it’s a good idea to go up half a size.
What to wear them with: Air Force 1s with tracksuits or jeans; running models with sportswear for workouts or walks.
adidas: retro classics and affordable running shoes
They’re for you if: you like retro football style (Samba, Superstar) or are looking for a good running shoe at a reasonable price.
Good to know: retro models like the Samba are flatter and fit more snugly. The Runfalcon 6 is one of the best-value models in the store.
What to wear them with: Samba with jeans or wide-leg trousers; Runfalcon for everyday wear and walks.
New Balance: comfort all day long
They’re for you if: you spend many hours on your feet and want something comfortable that also looks good.
Good to know: New Balance is known for its comfortable, roomier fits. The 9060 is a chunky model with a thick sole, while the 204L is lighter and simpler. Their prices are a little higher than those of other brands.
What to wear them with: light colors with grey or beige tracksuits, darker colors with jeans and a sweatshirt.
Puma: on-trend design at a good price
They’re for you if: you like bolder styles but don’t want to pay top prices.
Good to know: the Palermo is a retro model inspired by football, while the Velocity Nitro 5 is a soft running shoe. The Milenio Tech 2000 has a chunky sole in a 2000s-inspired style.
What to wear them with: Palermo with jeans and a sweatshirt; Velocity Nitro for everyday wear and sports.
If you need to decide quickly
Want a soft shoe for everything: Nike.
Like retro and football style: adidas.
On your feet all day: New Balance.
Want a bolder style at a good price: Puma.
How to get the right size
Measure your feet in the evening. Your feet swell slightly during the day, so evening is the best time to get an accurate measurement.
Measure the length in centimeters and compare it with the brand’s size chart, not the size of your old shoes.
If you’re between sizes or have wider feet, it’s better to go with the larger size.
